Mexico Cruise Past Czechia 3–0 to Seal Top Spot in Group A at 2026 World Cup

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s World Cup dream got a major boost as they stormed to a resounding 3–0 victory over Czechia on Wednesday night, wrapping up top spot in Group A with a flawless group stage campaign.

The win, Match 53 of the tournament, was sealed by goals from Mateo Chávez (55th minute), Julián Quiñones (61st minute), and Álvaro Fidalgo in stoppage time (90+4), capping a dominant display that left Czechia utterly outclassed. With this result, El Tri advanced to the knockout rounds with maximum points, having gone unbeaten and clean-sheeted throughout the group phase.

Earlier in the group stage, Mexico had edged South Africa 2–0 and held off a spirited South Korea side 1–0, with Raúl Jiménez, Quiñones, and Luis Romo finding the net in those wins. The defensive solidity and clinical finishing have become hallmarks of their campaign so far.

For Czechia, the defeat brought an end to their World Cup journey. After opening with a 2–1 loss to South Korea and a 1–1 draw with South Africa — where Ladislav Krejčí and Michal Sadílek scored their tournament goals — the team failed to find any rhythm against a red-hot Mexico side.

The match, kickoff at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT, aired live on FOX in English, with streaming available via FOX platforms and a free Spanish-language broadcast on Telemundo through Fubo.

It was also a fitting footnote in history: Mexico and Czechia have met just once before at a World Cup — a 3–1 win for Mexico in the 1962 group stage in Chile. Wednesday’s performance added another chapter to that legacy, reaffirming Mexico’s dominance in head-to-head clashes on football’s grandest stage.
