Algeria Sack Petkovic in Mutual Split After World Cup Exit

Algeria have parted ways with head coach Vladimir Petkovic by mutual agreement, the Football Association of Algeria (FAF) confirmed on Monday evening — bringing a swift end to his tenure just weeks after their exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Petkovic, who has been described in media reports as either Swiss or Bosnian-Swiss, was appointed as Algeria's head coach in February 2024, with his contract extended until July 2028. His final campaign concluded in disappointment, as Algeria were knocked out in the round of 32 by Switzerland — a result that sparked immediate debate and scrutiny back home.

The decision comes despite the FAF having extended Petkovic’s contract through July 2028 just prior to the squad’s departure for the tournament. That deal also secured key members of his technical staff, including assistant coach Davide Morandi, goalkeeping coach Guido Nanni, and head trainer Paolo Rongoni.

Algeria’s World Cup journey began in Group J, where they opened against Argentina before facing Jordan on June 22 in Santa Clara, California, and Austria on June 27 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Despite showing flashes of promise, particularly in their opening match, the team failed to progress beyond the first knockout stage.

With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations looming large on the horizon, the FAF has already launched its search for a new head coach. President Walid Sadi is leading the charge, with media speculation pointing toward Frenchman Eric Chelle as a potential candidate for the vacant role.

The split marks a pivotal moment for Algerian football, as the federation now looks to rebuild quickly ahead of major continental competition.
