Algeria Part Ways with Head Coach After 2026 World Cup

Algeria parted ways with head coach Vladimir Petkovic after the 2026 World Cup, in a mutual decision announced in early August 2026.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed the decision, which also includes the extension of contracts for technical staff members Davide Morandi, Guido Nanni, and Paolo Rongoni through July 2028.

The coach took charge in February 2024, inheriting a team with high expectations after years of inconsistent performances. Over 28 matches in charge, he delivered a solid record of 21 wins, four draws, and three losses—a run that ultimately secured Algeria’s place in Group J of the 2026 World Cup, which was co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Yet despite the qualification success and participation in the tournament, the federation opted for a change, citing a need for fresh direction following the World Cup. The move comes as a surprise to many, given the positive results and the fact that key staff had already been locked in for the future.

The federation has yet to announce a successor. The search for a new manager is now under way.
